Les Miles Moves to the Top in SEC Coaches Performance Report...Week Six

Published Oct 10, 2007

Welcome to the SEC Coaches Stock Market Report, Week Six. We look at SEC coaches and the impact they have on their teams like a Wall Street analyst watches stocks. We are gauging multiple factors to evaluate their performance. We are not privy to their practices or insider information; therefore we base our opinions on what we see and read about each team.  Our goal is to let you know who is up and who is down in the SEC.

This week, SEC winners outpaced losers 8-4. At this point, we only have one five-star rated team and it is LSU. LSU continues to win and that keeps them at the top of our rating system. Last week, we had a new stock, which is Auburn, and it continues to do well. This week, we have a new stock, which is Tennessee. Tennessee has been under performing, but seems to have all the pieces in place now.

Just so everybody understands the rules of the game; Our analysis is a big picture evaluation which includes a lot of factors. We are not evaluating how well a coach calls a game, unless he completely blows it with the potential of losing the confidence of his team. In our opinion, the SEC has twelve of the best coaches in the nation.

The confidence factor is our confidence in the program going forward; Five ***** being the highest rating. If you want to play at home, send us your rankings. Until then, enjoy. It is a volatile market. The stars indicate how we are feeling about a particular coach and this years team , but what really matters is the rank order of the coaches week to week.

1)  Our SEC Coach of the Week is Les Miles. LSU 28 Florida 24. Confidence, confidence, confidence was the story line of the game. Les Miles made confident decisions in the Florida game and his team won because of it. We love the leadership, competitiveness and expectation to win of this team. The undefeated LSU football team was the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation according to the Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers received all 65 first-place votes. This week LSU travels to Lexington to Commonwealth Stadium to play the #17 Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky always plays well at home and they have had nine days to prepare for this one. Game time 3:30 pm CT and carried by CBS. We will keep LSU at our highest confidence rating of 5*****.

2)  The Ole Ball Coach has worked his way to the Top of the SEC East. Steve Spurrier has his Gamecocks ranked #7 in the country and ahead of the Big Three powerhouse teams of the SEC East. Spurrier is winning with a Freshman quarterback and young players on both sides of the ball. The Gamecocks defense won the game against Kentucky. For the first time, Spurrier has a Gamecock defense that can score points and get turnovers. This week, the Gamecocks travel to Chapel Hill to play North Carolina. It should be a good challenge since the Tar Heels beat Miami last week. It’s another SEC-ACC Game which is always fun. Game time is 3:30 pm ET and carried by ABC Regional. We will keep USC at a solid 4**** confidence rating.

3)  Welcome back, Tennessee. We knew this team had a lot of talent; we just had not seen it show up on Saturday before now. Phillip Fulmer finally awakened his team to play hard, execute and win a big game. The Vols dominated the Georgia Bulldogs 35-14. The Vols defense held Georgia to two first downs in the first half. Tennessee won every facet of the game. Georgia had no answer. This week, the Vols travel to Miss State for a 1:30 pm CT game, carried on pay per view. We will keep Tennessee at a 3.5 *** confidence rating and watch to see if they can put together two big wins back-to-back.

4)  Our new featured stock is Auburn. Auburn stock has looked a whole lot better since South Florida is in the top 5 in the college rankings. Last week, Auburn whipped Vandy in front of the Auburn faithful 35-7. The Tigers needed a home win. This week, Auburn travels to Arkansas for our SEC Game of the Week. The game is at 6:45 pm CT and will be carried by ESPN. We are going to elevate Auburn to a 4 **** confidence rating because we believe they are back in the hunt.

5)  Ole Miss gets a shut out. Ole Miss 24 Louisiana Tech 0. Ole Miss snapped a four-game losing streak. This week, Ole Miss hosts Alabama in Oxford. Ole Miss took Bama into overtime last year in a SEC West shoot out. Bama ended up winning 26-23 but Ole Miss believes they can take Alabama at home. Game time is 11:30 am CT and will be carried by Lincoln Financial. This team is starting to come together; so we will upgrade them to a 2.5 ** confidence rating.

6)  Miss State continues to win. Miss State 30 UAB 13. Sylvester Croom continues to win his non-conference games. This week, Miss State hosts a rejuvenated Tennessee team in Starkville. Game time is 1:30 pm CT and the game will be pay per view. We believe Miss State will be playing an awakened bear in this game. Our confidence rating remains 3.5***.

7)  Arkansas is going to keep on running with their super running backs. Darren McFadden rushed for 122 yards on 25 carries while Felix Jones ran for 144 yards on 13 carries. The Arkansas defense held the Mocs to seven first downs for the entire game. This week, Arkansas hosts Auburn in our SEC Game of the Week. Arkansas is favored by three. McFadden has bruised ribs but is expected to play Saturday. Game time is 6:45 pm CT and will be carried on ESPN. We will keep Arkansas at a 4**** confidence rating, but they will be on our watch list for this game.

8)  Alabama has to figure out how to put together two good halves of football. Alabama took an early lead against Houston but had to squeak out a win 30-24. Our belief is a win is a win; so we still like the Tide. Bama travels to Oxford this weekend to play Ole Miss in a 11:30 am CT game carried by Lincoln Financial. We will keep Alabama at a 4**** confidence rating, but we will put them on our watch list for this weekend.

9)  In the biggest game of the season so far, Florida loses to LSU 28-24. Florida led at half time 17-7, but could not score in the fourth quarter to get the win. Florida leaves Baton Rouge with two back-to-back SEC losses. Two close games but no wins for the Gators. Tebow played great, but the LSU defense made life a little tougher on the Gator quarterback. This week Florida has a bye week. We believe Florida has a lot of talent and we will keep them at a 4.5**** confidence rating.

10)  Kentucky's six-game winning streak is snapped. For the second week in a row, Steve Spurrier has brought a loss to an SEC opponent on a winning streak. Andre’ Woodson had a difficult night with a Gamecock defense that was relentless. Kentucky drove the ball but could not score or stop the big plays on defense. This week, Kentucky hosts #1 LSU and hopes to continue their winning streak at home. Game time is 3:30 pm CT on CBS. We will keep Kentucky at a 4**** confidence rating, but we do not expect them to beat LSU.

11)  Bobby Johnson has been doing great with Vandy this year. Unfortunately, he had to play an Auburn team with something to prove. This game was pretty much over at half time with Auburn leading 28-0. Vandy is 3-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC games. This week, Vandy hosts a bruised, beaten up Georgia Bulldog team. Game time is 5 pm CT and will be carried on ESPN2. We will keep this team at a 3*** confidence rating and believe they have a chance against a confused Bulldog team.

12)  Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs moved to last place after their performance in Knoxville. Georgia was finished by half time. Matt Stafford was off and the defense was confused. Sometimes you just have a bad game. This week, Georgia travels to Nashville to play Vandy and the experts believe it will be close. The game will be carried on ESPN2 at 5 pm CT. This Georgia team is up and down. We are going to down grade the Dogs to a 3.5*** until we start seeing some consistency.
