Dawson County is Living Healthy

Published Jun 28, 2007

Have you been out to one of the local parks lately? Rock Creek and Veterans Memorial Park are booming with folks committed to a healthier lifestyle. Dawson County is living healthy and fit these days and it is evident in the droves of people exercising and using the trails at the local parks.

I was out at Rock Creek Park using the walking trail, and I couldn’t help but smile when I witnessed the numbers of people taking advantage of the facilities these days. The kids were having baseball practice on the ball fields and playing basketball in the gym. The aerobics class was “punching it out” to some awesome music and the weight room was at capacity. Last, but certainly not least, were the walkers, joggers and runners on the trail.

Many of the local faces are in training for the Peachtree Road Race. I have been so impressed with the commitment and endurance I’ve witnessed this week. Joey Homans, Allison Hamil, Tonya Porter, Johnny Reeves and many others have been at the park every afternoon, sweating it out in preparation for the big race. Joey passed me three times during my two mile walk. Needless to say, his pace is on track for a great finish in the Peachtree.

Not only are the endurance athletes using the facilities, but also those committed to weight loss and healthier living. Many county employees and elected officials have committed themselves to the County’s wellness initiative. Sheriff Carlisle, Lisa and Billy Thurmond, Shane Henson, Justin Siegel, their families and many others can be found at the parks exercising and running. While they are not training for the Peachtree, their efforts are paying off in pounds and inches.

Other notable locals are receiving dividends from their hard work and determination. Tracy Spindle, keep up the good work, you are my inspiration. Leighann Woodbury, before you know it you will be the girl in the song. There are many others who are worthy of mentioning and who deserve recognition for their commitment. Keep your focus and your “eye on the prize”.

By now you may be saying, “I’m not in to all that”. If so, think again. Are you burdened by the stress of the day, overwhelmed at work, having trouble sleeping, or tired of watching television? Are your children restless from being cooped up at home? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might want to read on.

There are many benefits to exercise and healthy living. Imagine, catching up with friends as you stroll around the walking trail. What about the “quality” family time you can enjoy as you walk and talk about the events of the day? Some tell me their walk is mind cleansing and stress relieving. (I’m sure we could all use some of that.) Many say they sleep better at night. Others thrive on the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and peaceful surroundings created by the “Grow Memories” beautification project and the Boy Scouts bluebird houses. Whatever the reason, there is something for everyone.

Dawson County is living healthy. Don’t believe me? Come and see for yourself. The park is the place to be in the afternoon and evening. The sunsets are beautiful. The people are friendly and the end result is rewarding. Make time to be there.
