Dawson County Community Invited to River Park Canoe Launch Dedication

Published Apr 4, 2008

The Dawson County Board of Commissioners and the Parks and Recreation Board invite everyone to attend the dedication ceremony of the Scenic Etowah River Canoe Launch on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 9:30am.

Bring a canoe and join the festivities as the canoe launch officially opens. From River Park, the Etowah gently passes through the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area with only a couple of easy class I-II rapids. The 8.5 mile run has a low degree of difficulty allowing the visitor ample time to enjoy the many sights and sounds of the river. There is no fee to put in; Kelly Bridge Road take out requires $3 per person.

Dawson County Commissioner Julie Hughes-Nix expressed, “The canoe launch will be a great addition to our recreation department in Dawson.” She continued, “I believe there will be many groups such as Appalachian Outfitters, Georgia Canoeing Association and many other river organizations, conservationists, and individuals who will be helpful and supportive in making this a success story.” Commissioner Nix extended a “big thank you” to all the people who served on the committee, “and especially Bill Hess for his vision of this great project.”

President of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce Linda Williams stated, “Dawson County is blessed with so many natural resources that both our visitors and local citizens can enjoy; and the canoe launch at River Park will enhance our unique collection of tourism assets. As the destination marketing organization for the county, we will be able to expand our marketability to outdoor enthusiasts.”

The River Park project was approved by the Dawson County Board of Commissioners in 2005. Property for the park was purchased from Mr. Harley Bennett. Many people and organizations were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition including Dawson County Public Works, Dawson County Parks and Recreation, and those serving on the River Park project committee.
