Saints’ First Baseman Signs with SF Giants

Published Jul 7, 2008

Rob Flanigan’s dreams have come true.

The North Georgia Saints’ 6-foot, 4-inch, 230-pound first baseman reached a deal with the San Francisco Giants this week after being drafted in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this month.

“This is definitely a dream come true,” Flanigan said after arriving in Arizona to take part in his first professional workout. “Signing a professional baseball contract has been a goal I have had since I was 4 years old and I knew this would eventually happen if I stuck with it and put everything I had into it.

“I was so excited to be selected by the Giants,” said Flanigan, a junior transfer from Truett McConnell College in Cleveland. “I could not believe it when I saw my name come up (on ESPN) and I can’t wait to start playing.”

Flanigan was one of eight college players drafted from the Peach Belt Conference following a record-setting season that saw him bat .403 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs. After only one season in a North Georgia uniform, Flanigan won’t be forgotten. He set several Saints’ batting records, including a new single-season mark with 20 home runs.
