Les Miles and the LSU Tigers Lead the SEC in Week 2

Published Sep 13, 2007

Welcome to SEC Coaches Stock Market, Week Two. We look at coaches like Wall Street analysts look at stocks. Looking at a variety of factors each week to gauge their performance, we let you know who is up and who is down. This week, winners outpaced losers 7-4.

The total numbers for the week were higher than expected. Blue chips LSU and Florida continued to dominate their games, but traditional winners Georgia and Auburn came away with losses for the week. There were two SEC head- to-head games with both home teams losing.

Just so everybody understands the rules of the game, our analysis is a big picture evaluation which includes a lot of factors. We are not evaluating how well a coach called a game. If your team loses, the coaches stock goes down, period. If you want to play this at home, send us your rankings. Until then, enjoy.

1)  Our SEC Coach of the Week has to be Les Miles at LSU. LSU completely dominated Virginia Tech on prime time national television 48-7. The Tigers' winning streak is nine games, and their home winning streak in fourteen games. We thought when LSU whipped Mississippi State that State was bad. After seeing LSU whip #9 Virginia Tech, we realize LSU is just that good. Coach Miles' 48-7 win is the largest margin of victory by LSU over a Top 10 team in school history. This week, Middle Tennessee is in Baton Rouge on pay per view.

2)  Steve Spurrier has to get the number two rating for upsetting his favorite team, the Bulldogs. Last week’s #10 ranking, moved up by beating SEC East powerhouse Georgia Bulldogs in Athens. The victory was the highest ranked SEC opponent that Carolina has defeated on the road. The Gamecocks' perspective went from 0-5 against Georgia to winning 3 out of 8. Spurrier’s offense was good, but the defense and the kicker won the game. Spurrier called it “ugly,” but he was happy to take the win. This game is always close, but this time the final score fell in South Carolina’s favor. Next opponent, South Carolina State in Columbia. Pay per view.

3)  Nick Saban moved up one spot this week by beating an SEC opponent. Redshirt freshman Terry Grant rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The Crimson Tide held Vandy to just 57 yards rushing. Alabama played well on the road and gave Nick Saban his first SEC win as the Bama Coach. Next opponent, Arkansas in Tuscaloosa. ESPN.

4)  Urban Meyer would be higher but the Gators have played two cupcakes. The Gators racked up 49 points in the first half! Florida extends its home win streak to 17 games. Tim Tebow was 18 for 25 for 236 yards and named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The Gators even blocked two punts to defeat Troy 59-31. The win was costly with WR Caldwell injured and RB James questionable for Saturday’s SEC Game with Tennessee in the Swamp. CBS.

5)  Rich Brooks holds down the #5 spot for the second week in a row. Kentucky is on a five game winning streak at home. The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight games. For the second week in a row, the Wildcats had over 200 yards passing and receiving. Hopefully, Brooks can continue to win at home as this week’s opponent is Louisville. ESPN Classic.

6)  Phillip Fulmer took it to Southern Miss 39-19. Erik Ainge threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns. The Vols got some good production from wide receivers Austin Rogers and Lucas Taylor, both having 100+ yards. Tennessee next travels to the Swamp to play the Gators. CBS

7)  Sylvester Croom moved from the bottom to the middle of the pack this week. Beating Tulane 38-17 made the Bulldogs feel better. The Bulldogs had almost 500 yards of total offense. QB Henig completed passes to ten different receivers in the game. Mississippi State travels to Auburn this week. TV: Lincoln Financial

8)  Houston Nutt keeps the #8 spot for the second week in a row. Arkansas had a bye; so we moved them right between the winning teams and the losing ones. Arkansas did move up two spots in the Associated Press poll to #16. Nutt can’t wait to unleash Felix Jones and Darren McFadden. Arkansas travels to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama and Nick Saban in a huge SEC West match-up. ESPN.

9)  Mark Richt fell from the top spot last week. Georgia looked so good against Oklahoma State that Richt was riding high at #11 in the AP polls. However, two Brinkley boys recruited right down the road in Thomson made the Bulldogs suffer their first loss of the season. Coach Richt said the Dawgs missed opportunities. The Bulldogs play Western Carolina in Athens this week. Pay per view.

10)  Bobby Johnson moved from midway through the pack last week to the bottom three this week. Vandy had a rough time getting anything going offensively. DJ Moore had a career best 13 tackles, including 12 that were solo. This week's opponent is Ole Miss in Nashville. Pay per view.

11)  Ed Orgeron’s Rebels had 534 total yards which is the most in his era. However, Missouri packed in a lot of scores to give Ole Miss a 38-25 loss. Ole Miss travels to Vandy this week. Pay per view.

12)  Tommy Tuberville brings up the bottom this week. Auburn fell to South Florida in overtime, 26-23. Auburn has had a rough start this year. The Tigers have to figure out how to get the offense going. This week Auburn hosts Mississippi State. TV: Lincoln Financial.
