Motorists Need to be Aware of Canadian Geese

Hello:

My husband and I drive along Buford Dam Road, over the dam, a couple of times each day as we have done for over two years. There is something that we have started seeing over the last couple of months that was not an issue previously. There have been more and more geese run over and killed on the dam. This has not been an issue in two years, so something has obviously changed and it is NOT the way the geese behave. They are sometimes on the side of the road, but I have NEVER seen one venture into the street.

Since this is a new problem and many of the geese we have seen dead were still on the side of the road, I think that they may be being hit on purpose, perhaps by teenagers. Others may have been hit by people speeding, people new to the area or by those not familiar with this road and the geese who live here.

We are encroaching on their territory and we should have as much respect as possible. I would like to have an article or letter writing campaign started that may prompt a sign being put up to help protect the geese. This could be a yellow 'watch for geese' sign, a 'caution crossing geese' sign, or perhaps a fine imposed for messing with the wildlife.

We need to do something to raise awareness in the community.

Thanks much,

Michelle Kelly
