Most fatal fires occur in the home.  Have a fire escape plan to keep your family safe.

Dawson County Emergency Services will conduct a county-wide home fire escape drill on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 10:00 pm.

“Most fatal fires occur in the home,” states Dawson County Emergency Services Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield.  “Having working smoke alarms as well as planning and practicing home fire escape drills can reduce your risk of injury or death.”

“The time was selected to see how your kids will respond to the sound of a smoke alarm if sleeping,” Satterfield explains.

Earlier this week home fire escape drill step-by-step instructions were sent home with all students attending Dawson County public elementary schools.

Please join together as a community and participate in the home fire escape drill this Friday.  Knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death.

Plan and practice a home fire escape drill.

1.  Draw out your escape plan.  Know where to meet outside.

2.  Go over your plan with your family.

3.  Keep the way out clear.

4.  Put your plan where everyone can see it.

5.  Push the smoke alarm button to start the fire drill.

6.  Get out fast.

7.  Practice getting out when people are both awake and asleep.

8.  Go to your meeting place.

9.  In a real fire, call 9-1-1 from outside.
