The man who helped shape Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawson County and bring Lanier Technical College to Forsyth County has died.
Former Forsyth County Commissioner James Harrington, a life-long Democrat, died Saturday at the age of 82.
In addition to his years of public service, Harrington owned and operated Forsyth Industries in Cumming. His political career consisted of service as a commissioner in Forsyth County and also as a city council member in Roswell. In 2000, Harrington lost a bid to become Georgia’s 9th District Congressman, losing to long-time incumbent Nathan Deal.
Harrington also served as a longtime member of Georgia’s Board of Technical and Adult Education.
On May 7th, Lanier Technical College renamed the main building of its Forsyth campus the “James C. Harrington Jr. Building," in honor of the man who fought to bring the school’s first satellite campus to Forsyth County. At the same ceremony, the college held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a major expansion that will double the space of the Forsyth campus.
Lanier Tech’s Forsyth Campus opened in 1998 and quickly reached its capacity for students attending the school.
Harrington also will be remembered for donating land that helped establish Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawson County.
Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cumming
