Lake Lanier claims seventh victim

Published Jul 14, 2008

A 49-year-old Decatur man is the latest victim of drowning in Lake Lanier.

Hall County authorities say Michael Abrams went for a swim to cool off while fishing with two friends near Holiday Marina in south Hall County on Saturday.

Abrams quickly became distressed and made a plea for help, authorities said.

One of Abrams’ friends jumped in the lake to help him. Abrams went under the water before his friend could reach him, authorities said.

Hall County Dive Team members searched the cove near Holiday Marina for approximately 45 minutes before discovering Abrams’ body at 1:40 p.m. in 12 feet of water.

Attempts to revive Abrams were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Abrams is the seventh drowning victim in Lake Lanier this year and the fifth since the July 4th holiday. Eight people drowned in Lake Lanier in 2007.
