Gainesville Man Charged in Shooting Incident

Published Jul 7, 2008

A 72-year-old Gainesville man is in custody in the Hall County Detention Center following a shooting Saturday at a golf cart store on Brown’s Bridge in Gainesville, sheriff’s Major Jeff Strickland said.

Van Kierstead, owner of Van’s Golf Carts, was arrested and charged with shooting up his own business with a pistol and a shotgun, Major Strickland said.

Hall County sheriff’s deputies responded to 5303 Brown’s Bridge Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. to the report of shots fired inside the golf cart business, Major Strickland said.

“Deputies discovered that the business owner, who was intoxicated, had fired a shotgun and a pistol inside the store approximately eight times,” Major Strickland said.

No customers were inside the business at the time shooting, however an adjacent apartment was occupied but no one was injured, Major Strickland said.

Deputies arrested Kierstead and charged him with reckless conduct. He currently is being held at the Hall County jail, Major Strickland said.

The shooting incident remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Major Strickland said.
