DOT Announces No Road Construction for Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

Published Nov 14, 2007

According to the Georgia DOT, there will be no lane closures on Interstates or State Routes this Thanksgiving weekend. Teri Pope, DOT Communications Officer said, “Lane closures will not be allowed over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Lane closures on Interstates and State Routes for construction are prohibited from 5 a.m. Wednesday, November 20 until Midnight, Sunday, November 25. Work can still occur on projects, but it must be outside of the travel lanes, and not impacting your drive.”

DOT is now including mandatory 'no work days' on holidays and peak travel days around holidays into construction contracts.

“Even though we won’t be working in the roads, please make sure to slow down, as many crashes in work zones occur while that work zone is not active. Also remember that all fines are doubled in work zones even when they aren’t active. Speeding through a work zone can hurt you and your pocketbook,” said DOT Board Chair Mike Evans.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about traffic concerns. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, construction, and delays due to bad weather. Callers can also reach live operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org
