Dawson County Emergency Services spent last weekend training on one of four new EZ-IO® life-saving tools. This cutting-edge medical technology is now available on each ambulance with all emergency services personnel trained for its use.
The EZ-IO® product has gained widespread acceptance as an alternative method of administering crucial IV drugs and fluids to a patient through the bone marrow cavity. It is especially useful in emergency situations when first responders need to provide emergency care to save lives and the patient’s vein has collapsed or is otherwise inaccessible.
Intended for use by emergency services personnel, this hand-held, lithium battery-powered driver was “designed to penetrate the intraossesous (IO) space by rapidly, but gently drilling through the bone with a hollow needle, inserting vital fluids directly into the bone marrow,” according to Captain Robbie Lee who conducted training for the department.
“The implementation of the EZ-IO® device is only another example of the progressive innovations in patient care Dawson County Emergency Services is known for,” stated Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford.” It is a great device that gives our staff another option for patient care as they continually deliver the highest level of pre-hospital emergency medical care available anywhere.”
