Preliminary investigation indicates that Saturday's fire was caused when a vehicle being crushed ignited a scrap pile...
Shortly after 11:40 am on Saturday, June 21, Dawson County Emergency Services responded to a 911 report of a vehicle fire located in a scrap pile off Lumpkin Campground Road at the 400 Waste Disposal Center.
According to Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield, “On arrival we found a large pile of crushed cars and scrap metal on fire at a scrap yard.” Firefighters from Engine Three placed a 2 ½” hand line in place for safety and to protect other structures from exposure. Firefighters laid line to a hydrant on Grizzle Road; and three tanker trucks, including one from Forsyth County, were added to “supplement the established water supply,” said Satterfield. “Approximately 120,000 gallons of water and foam were used to extinguish the fire,” he continued.
“The operation involved two engines, three tankers, one med unit on the scene for rehab and safety, and 19 personnel,” Satterfield said.
