The challenge of residency against Dawson County District 4 Commission candidate Thayer Spencer wasn’t the first legal hurdle he’s faced in 2008.

Spencer spent seven days in the Forsyth County Detention Center in late January and early February following his arrest on a Forsyth Magistrate Court’s bench warrant for failure to appear in court, Forsyth County sheriff’s reports show.

The bench warrant was issued after Spencer allegedly failed to appear before a Forsyth Magistrate to answer a charge of violating a county stop work order on a project in Forsyth County, sheriff’s reports show.

The charge is a misdemeanor, the equivalent of a speeding ticket, Forsyth County sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Frank Huggins said.

However, in Dawson County political circles, the charge likely could sour voters. Commissioners are held to the highest standard because of the policy-making decisions they must make on a daily basis.

Spencer was arrested on Jan. 29 and was later released from the Forsyth detention center on Feb. 5, Forsyth County jail records show.

Spencer, a political newcomer in Dawson County, of course faces Incumbent District 4 County Commissioner Julie Nix in the July 15 Republican Primary.

Earlier this month, the Dawson County Board of Elections and Registration determined that Spencer was eligible to continue seeking the District 4 Commission seat following a challenge of his residency.
