The countdown to the July 15th Republican Primary begins in earnest next week for several contested races in Dawson and Lumpkin counties.
Advanced voting for the local elections begins July 7 at the respective headquarters for both counties’ Board of Elections and Registration.
In Dawson County, voters must decide two contested County Commission races. In District 2, incumbent Terri Tragesser faces challenger James Swafford. In District 4, incumbent Julie Hughes Nix faces opposition from political newcomer Thayer Spencer. It’s the first run for office for Spencer, who has survived a residency challenge. He now must deal with the news of his January arrest on a Forsyth County Magistrate Court’s bench warrant for failure to appear on a charge of violating a Forsyth County stop work order.
In the Probate Judge’s race, three-term incumbent Jennifer Burt faces political newcomer Henry Young.
The Dawson County race most likely headed to a runoff is the Chief Magistrate’s seat. Dawson County Associate Magistrate Lisa Thurmond, Marsha Freeman-Waller and Dan Pichon seek to fill the seat of incumbent Chief Magistrate Johnny Holtzclaw, who did not seek reelection.
In Lumpkin County, a hotly contested sheriff’s race between incumbent Mark McClure and challenger Dahlonega City Marshal Stacy Jarrard headlines that local ballot. Lumpkin County voters also must decide who will be the next County Commission Chair and Clerk of Court.
