Instructors at Lanier Technical College have nominated nine students for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL). Instructors in all occupational fields were asked to nominate one outstanding student from each program to compete at the local level.
Dr. Mike Moye, president of Lanier Tech said, “The purpose of the GOAL program is to spotlight the importance of technical education in today’s workforce and to recognize outstanding achievement by students in Georgia’s technical colleges.”
A screening committee of administrators and instructors at Lanier Tech will now review all of the nominations and interview each of the students. After the nominees have been ranked, four finalists will be chosen to compete for the title of Lanier Technical College GOAL winner. One week later, a committee made up of members of the business community will evaluate the four finalists to choose the winner. At the college level, GOAL is sponsored by the Gainesville Lions Club and the Lanier Tech Student Government Association.
The Lanier Tech GOAL winner will be recognized at a Gainesville Lions Club luncheon in March and will compete in May against GOAL winners from other Georgia technical colleges during GOAL Week in Atlanta. The state GOAL winner will serve as a spokesperson for the Technical College System of Georgia and will receive a new automobile.
In the past two state GOAL competitions, representatives from Lanier Technical College have both been finalists. The 2006 representative, Christina Woody, was state runner-up.
