On Friday, June 6, a crowd gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Dawson County Adult Learning Center. Joining forces, the Dawson County Board of Commissioners, Dawsonville City Council, Lanier Technical College and the Dawson County Board of Education worked together to provide a modern educational facility where individuals can improve their quality of life by obtaining a GED.

Lanier Tech’s Dr. Michael Moye opened the ceremony expressing the necessity to fight the war on illiteracy. Commissioner Julie Hughes Nix said the new center will make our county greater. Chairman Mike Berg, who fought for the project a number of years, commented on the efforts taken for this collaboration between parties involved and said, “Let’s not stop the cooperative effort here. That’s what makes things happen and that’s what makes Dawson County.”

The nearly 4000 square foot facility adjoins the Dawson campus of Lanier Technical College and offers four classrooms including a computer lab. Not only will the Adult Learning Center provide opportunities for adults to prepare for a GED (General Educational Development Diploma), but will also administer the test making it easily accessible. English as a Second Language classes are also available. Summer classes begin July 7.

In September, 2006 the Georgia Department of Community Affairs awarded a $500K Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award to help finance the project.

The Dawson County Adult Learning Center project was managed by Dawson County Engineering Tech David McKee from construction to completion. The project was completed in seven months from groundbreaking.
