A groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 21, 2007 as construction got underway on the Dawson County Adult Learning Center.  The Dawson County Board of Commissioners and the Dawsonville City Council joined forces on the project with Lanier Technical College and the Dawson County Board of Education to provide a modern educational facility where individuals can improve their quality of life by obtaining a GED. 

In September, 2006 the Georgia Department of Community Affairs awarded a $500K Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award to finance the project.  An anonymous donor contributed an additional $250,000.  Cash and in-kind matches bring the total budget to just over $900,000. 

The nearly 4000 square foot facility adjoins the Dawson campus of Lanier Technical College and will offer four classrooms including a computer lab.  Not only will the Adult Learning Center provide opportunities for adults to prepare for a GED (General Educational Development Diploma), but will also administer the test making it easily accessible.  At present testing requires a trip to another county.  Additionally, the Adult Learning Center can also help prepare adults planning to begin or return to college.  

 “ESL classes will be offered at the center,” said Adult Learning Center Lead Instructor Kathy Davis.  “Hopefully, community classes will also be in the center’s future.  I am looking into a basic computer class for seniors that might help improve reading or language skills.  Anyone looking to brush up on even one subject, whether math, language or reading, is welcome at the center,” stated Davis. 

Many individuals and groups came together to make this vision a reality.  Commission Chairman Mike Berg acknowledges the contributions of David Brown, former director of the Dawson Literacy Center, who was instrumental in the development of the program and securing the grant.  Brown passed away before the endeavor could be realized.  Berg also recognizes Dr. Sheila Stille for her contributions in the grant procurement and “making this project a success.”      

Completion of construction of the Dawson County Learning Center is expected spring, 2008.
