Carmen Agra Deedy, an internationally known author of children´s literature, a storyteller and radio contributor, will appear on the Brenau campus Saturday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at Hosch Theater for a performance and book-signing event that is open to students and the public free of charge. Marlene Giguere, director of the university´s Trustee Library, says Deedy´s appearance is part of the Georgia Festival of the Book, coordinated through the Hall County Library in Gainesville and the Georgia Humanities Council.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Deedy and her family fled the island in 1963 after the Fidel Castro-led civil war. She currently resides in Atlanta. Deedy is a is a regular contributor to National Public Radio's "Weekend All Things Considered" and "Latino USA," but as a storyteller, she has performed across the United States and Canada in venues that include Disney Institute, the New Victory Theater, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Kennedy Center and numerous storytelling festivals.
She is the author of seven children´s books, including "Agatha's Feather Bed: Not Just Another Wild Goose Story" and the recently published "Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale," which has been described as "a deliciously inventive retelling" of a beloved Caribbean yarn. Her audio collection, Publisher´s Weekly named her audio collection, "Growing Up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia," as the best audio storytelling book of 1995.
