A Drop in the Barrel - Conserving Water at Home

Published Nov 16, 2007

Experts are now predicting that effects of the drought in Georgia could linger for five years, three years longer than the last severe drought of the 1980s. Besides adhering to the state and locally imposed outdoor watering bans, there are other things you and your family can do to save water while still keeping your yard healthy and beautiful.

We’ve heard about turning off the water while you brush your teeth, doing laundry only with a full load and taking quick showers instead of baths. A next logical step is to collect water that normally goes down the drain into a receptacle or what has traditionally been called a “rain barrel.”

Backyard Birds and Gifts Co. is now the sole local source for the attractive, terra cotta-colored water conservation Grecian Pepper Rain Barrels. These attractive, 60-gallon barrels were originally used to bring delicious, golden peppers from Greece to the U.S. They have been refitted with a brass water spigot and rear overflow valve that allows any excess water to be directed to a designated garden or flower bed. Exclusive to this rain barrel also is a fitted perforated top with an inside mesh screen to keep out bugs and debris.

Why a rain barrel with so little rain, you say? Have fun collecting water in buckets in the shower. Dip them into the tub after the kids’ bath or after washing supper’s dishes in the kitchen sink. Empty them every day into your rain barrel and you’re good to go for all your house plant and yard watering needs.

Stop by Backyard Birds & Gifts Co. across from The Midway Mealhouse on Highway 9 in Forsyth County or call 678-356-2473 to reserve your rain barrel. Happy Conserving!
