Norm's Tasting Notes: 2006 Franciscan Napa Valley Chardonnay

Published Jun 29, 2008

Founded over thirty years ago in the Napa Valley at St. Helena, the Franciscan Winery has become a standard for fine California wines, especially Napa Chardonnay. Winemaker Janet Myers joined the staff in 2003 and became Head Winemaker in 2005. Using both new and traditional wine-making methods she has turned out some finely crafted wines in the last few years, carrying on the Franciscan tradition.

The 2006 Franciscan Napa Valley Chardonnay is a great example! Made from grapes grown in both the Carneros and Napa regions, the wine was fermented sur lie for eight months in both French and American oak. Coming in at 13.5% alcohol, this is a beautiful wine of pale yellow color and the aromas of ripe pear and lemon peel. The flavor is subtle yet compelling with honey and vanilla bursting all over the crisp apple flavors. The eight months in oak give it a mellow toasted oak finish which is crisp and clean.

Just enough oak to pair well with Lobster or King Crab Legs, this will be perfect with your Shrimp Scampi! "Oh, Lord, bring on the shellfish bibs, I just might be in heaven!"

As a treat for the July 4th weekend, we are featuring this wonderful Chardonnay at a special price for the upcoming holiday weekend!
