Lt. Governor Casey Cagle will celebrate Veterans Day by speaking to high school students today in Lumpkin County and on Tuesday, interviewing six WWII Veterans in an effort to collect oral history of WWII for today’s young Georgians.

“As citizens who live each day with the blessing of freedom, we need not forget that our freedom came at a cost. I look forward to spending time with these remarkable veterans who sacrificed and fought in WWII. By recording their history for future generations, we will hold onto the rich and prized stories that create the framework of our freedom,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.

Cagle will partner with Georgia Public Broadcasting in collecting the oral history of the veterans. Cagle’s discussion will be formatted to distribute to teachers and students who are studying WWII and are interested in hearing first-hand from veterans who actually served in various roles during the war. The taping will also be included in Georgia Public Broadcasting's World War II Oral History project.

The veterans who will be interviewed served in a variety of roles including a Tuskegee Airman, a pilot who flew 35 missions with the Mighty Eighth and a W.A.V.E.S. (women accepted for volunteer emergency service) volunteer. Topics discussed will include the impact WWII had on the veteran’s families and communities, war stories and reflections from the veterans on their service and country.
