The Holly Children's Theatre is pleased to present School House Rock Live, Jr., November 8-11, 2007.
The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs is not only making a small-screen comeback, instructing a whole new generation to "Unpack Your Adjectives"and "Do The Circulation," it's lighting up stages across the nation and is coming to the Holly Theatre to delight audiences of all ages next weekend.
Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs as "Just A Bill," "A Noun is a Person, Place, or Thing" and "Conjunction Junction."
Shows run at 7 p.m. November 8-10 and 2 p.m. November 10-11. All shows will be on the main stage of the Holly Theatre and are presented by five of the Holly's top adult performers, plus a cast of nine youth ensemble members. Tickets cost $4 for students/children and $8 for adults.
Director Brooke Caldwell, a history major at North Georgia College & State University and veteran performer, is thrilled to bring this performance to Dahlonega. After bringing it to nearly 5,000 schoolchildren this past month for field trips and Arts in the School performances, Caldwell says, "I'm excited to educate and entertain people of all ages at the Holly now -- especially since so many adults remember and love the cartoon. It's a great nostalgic trip!"
Nathan Gerrells, the assistant director for Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., can be heard singing some of these tunes in his fifth grade class at Longbranch Elementary School in his lesson plans. Gerrells comments that he just can't help it because "these are the kind of songs you keep singing and humming for weeks after you see the show."
Nathan was the director of High School Musical, The Jungle Book and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the Holly and also directs the Holly Children's Theatre competition teams and will be directing Seussical in the spring.
The cast is just as enthusiastic about this productionand includes Michael Arens (who in the past performed with The Atlanta Opera and the Capitol City Opera, and has been seen on the Holly stage in roles such as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man), Kate McElliott (the Education Director for the Holly Theatre), Sarah Peavy (recently seen as Mrs. Darbus in High School Musical at the Holly), Benny Higgins (a veteran performer that has been performing professionally since the age of seven), and Justin Gilstrap (a regular at the Holly from The Wizard of Oz and many, many more). Nine top-notch youth will also appear on stage this November.
