In late 2007, Governor Sonny Perdue ordered public water providers in North Georgia to cut their withdrawals by 10 percent. For water providers and businesses still struggling to find ways to comply with new reductions, a waterfree urinal system offers both an immediate and long-term solution that can help save billions of gallons of water annually.
It’s estimated that 20 percent of all water used in a typical building is a result of flush urinals. A single waterfree urinal from Falcon Waterfree Technologies can save an average of 40,000 gallons of water every year, and can be an immediate solution to meeting the Governor’s 10 percent reduction request.
Today, with waterfree urinals installed across metro Atlanta and North Georgia, the company is helping save more than an estimated 52 millions of gallons of water annually. That’s enough water to fill 11,550 water tanker trucks.
“We feel good knowing that we have been doing our part to conserve as much water as possible both prior to and during this time of severe drought,” said Energy Manager Luke Wyland at Fort McPherson, which has been a Falcon customer for four years and has nearly 300 waterfree urinals and other water-saving technologies installed throughout the base. “In addition to saving about 12 million gallons of water annually, we’re also saving more than $100,000 a year in water and sewer costs.”
Neighboring Forsyth County Schools is a customer of Falcon Waterfree urinals, and other Atlanta-area customers include the World of Coca-Cola, Newton County Schools, Southface and Cobb County.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, less than 1 percent of the Earth’s water is usable by humans, and as much as 5 percent of that usable water is used to carry away urine.
“The use of water for a building’s urinal system is an unneeded depletion of a vitally important resource,” said Falcon Vice President of Government Affairs Danny Gleiberman, a member of the United States Green Building Council. “By delivering a product that can arrive to a customer within two days, installed within a couple of hours and save millions of gallons of water annually, we provide not only short-term, immediate relief to today’s current water crisis shortage, but also a long-term strategic solution to greater water conservation.”
The Falcon Waterfree urinal looks the same as any other urinal except that there is no flush valve and no pool of water in the bowl. Urine enters the waterfree urinal and passes through a unique, patented cartridge. The cartridge acts as a one-way trap, allowing fluids to drain to the sewer while preventing odors from escaping into the restroom.
In addition to being an important water conservation solution, Falcon Waterfree urinals also offer a cost-effective, hygienic and environmentally sound option over traditional flush-type systems. With no water, there are no water or sewer charges, and less sewage is produced, thereby reducing the demand of waste treatment facilities.
It’s estimated that every 1 billion gallons of water saved avoids the emission of 18 million pounds of CO2 because of the reduced energy demand. Furthermore, independent studies show that flush-style urinals have five-times more bacteria than waterfree urinals because water provides a breeding ground for bacteria.
