Helping Children with Disabilities Build Social Skills

Originally Published Apr 6, 2009, 6:47pm (Updated Apr 7, 2009, 12:59pm)

Children with disabilities, regardless of type, can sometimes have difficulty developing social skills. Even at school, where social interactions traditionally take place, some children struggle to engage in normal social activities.

A child having difficulty with sensory perception, for example, may shy away from group activities because of the noise level or commotion. Similarly, children with attention or communication problems can struggle with group interaction because their disabilities may result in being ostracized from the group. There are a number of reasons why children with specific disabilities may have problems developing their social skills, but there are ways to help.

Kidz Therapy Networks, Inc., a premier pediatric therapy center in Cumming that treats a broad range of disability diagnosis from Autism to speech and motor skill delays, offers social skills group services. By providing a safe place for children to interact, children can learn and build social skills. Therapists can individually address specific needs and help children develop social coping skills in a non-threatening environment.

Kidz Therapy Networks offers screenings and evaluations, occupational, physical, speech and language therapy to children with a variety of special needs. Visit Kidz Therapy Networks online at www.kidztherapyinc.com or call (770) 205-5551 for more information about social groups and therapy services.
