Norm's Tasting Notes: 2006 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon and Claret

Published Jul 18, 2008

There are so many celebrities in the wine business that it would take many pages just to list them all. One who stands out, though, is film-maker Francis Ford Coppola, who has been producing some good wines for over twenty years now. In March of 2006, Coppola Presents Winery in Sonoma County, California began producing the Diamond Label Series of wines at their new facility. Winemaker Corey Beck had this to say:

“This is our second year producing Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. For a decade we’ve bottled Claret – a robust red blend largely comprised of Cabernet – but we wanted to offer a single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon as well in order to show off the elegance of our grapes. We combine fruit from appellations as far north as El Dorado and as far south as Paso Robles.”

I had the opportunity to taste the 2006 Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon recently and found it to be delightful! It is very dark red in color, and has an explosive nose of cherry and berry. The flavors abound with fruit, with black cherry and plum being most abundant. The finish is lingering with good smooth tannins derived from its fourteen months in both French and American oak. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with an alcohol content of 13.8%. It was a perfect compliment to my two inch thick, medium rare fillet mignon!

I am not the only one to like this wine; it took a 90 score in “Cheers” magazine and a Gold Medal at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition. We have both the Claret and the Cabernet Sauvignon available at our store. The Claret would be slightly softer but both are great with any grilled meat, especially that two inch thick fillet mignon.
