Norm's Tasting Notes: 2006 Don Miguel Gascon Malbec

Published Mar 28, 2008

We are always searching for good value in wine, and finding more and more of it from the continent of South America. They have been making wine down there for more than two hundred years, and now we are enjoying the fruits of their labors in the United States, with an abundance of good wines from that continent.

Don Miguel Gascon established his winery in 1884 in the high altitudes near the Andes Mountains, in the Mendoza growing region of Argentina. A fine modern day example of the good wines made in that region is the 2006 Gascon Malbec, which recently received a 90 score in Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate."

This big bold Malbec is chock full of ripe blueberry and blackberry flavors, which swirl around soft and supple tannins for a rich full finish. Malbec, once used almost exclusively by the French for blending with other better known Bordeaux grapes, has now become the premier red wine form Argentina. This Gascon Malbec is perfect for grilled meats and a large assortment of cheeses. For a real treat try it with some two inch thick pork loin chops seared on the grill!
