For several years World Beverage 400 has had a great relationship with the Brotherhood Winery of New York State, and our customers have enjoyed many of the excellent wines made there. The winemaker, Cesar Baeza has visited our store on several occasions. Cesar is not only a good winemaker, he is a wonderful person who has lived a very interesting life. I thought some of you might enjoy a little of the history of the Brotherhood Winery and Cesar Baeza.
"Brotherhood Winery located in the picturesque village of Washingtonville, NY is America's Oldest Winery. Brotherhood was established by a European emmigrant, John Jaques, who produced the first commercial vintage in 1839. The winery has been in continuous operation since that time - making the Winery the oldest in the U.S."
Cesar became a principal is the winery in July, 1987. and concentrated on improving the quality of the primarily sweet specialty wines for which Brotherhood was known, while introducing a superior line of New York State "varietal" wines which quickly gained acclaim among national and international wine experts.
Cesar Baeza is a naturalized U.S. Citizen and a native of Chile. He graduated from the University of Chile in 1970 as a Specialist in Viticulture and Enology. He began working in Chile in the National Agricultural Research Institute, in the Enology Department He earned a Master's Degree in Viticulture from the University of Madrid in Spain. From 1978 to 1987 Cesar was in charge of Technical Services in Valhalla, NY for PepsiCo's Wine and Spirits Division. In this position he was responsible for the Quality Assurance Program for the Monsieur Henri product line. He was also instrumental in creating the Premiat wines from Romania, Trakia from Bulgaria, and Duna from Hungary.
Wine & Vines Magazine, the voice of the wine industry, acknowledged Cesar's achievements by naming him one of the country's "Top 50 Newsworthy People in the Wine Industry Today," in August of 1998.
We sell quite a lot of the Brotherhood New York State Pinot Noir and Riesling, and we have recently added the 2004 Brotherhood Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon which rivals some of the best from California. It has a full-bodied and rich structure full of cherries and berries, with moderate tannins in its finish. It is a great accompaniment to your grilled New York strip steak!
