2005 Rutherford Ranch Merlot

Published Oct 3, 2008

The Rutherford Ranch wines from the Napa Valley were formerly known as Round Hill, which was started in the late 1970's by Ernie and Virginia Van Asperen. Upon their retirement, long-time shareholders, Marko and Theo Zaninovich, acquired the winery and operate it today. They are making very good wine, and I have sampled several of their varietals including the Napa Valley Merlot.

The 2005 Rutherford Ranch Merlot is a delightful mellow, and medium bodied Merlot which embraces all of the best of the true Merlot characteristics. The wine has the aroma of plums and black cherries, which helps establish the cherry and blackberry flavors I like so much in merlot. The finish is smooth and lingering with mild tannins and a mixture of chocolate and cherry that is creamy smooth on the palate. We enjoyed this one with two inch thick pork loin chops marinated in red wine and garlic, and slow grilled over an open flame.

I scored this one an 87.
