A job fair held at Lanier Technical College’s main campus in Oakwood drew hundreds of job seekers lastTuesday. Fifty-five area employers were on hand to discuss employment opportunities within their organizations and accept applications.
Malissa Lawrence, job placement coordinator at Lanier Tech, said that the turnout of approximately 800 job seekers was more than double the number expected by organizers of the event. The fair was sponsored by Lanier Technical College, The Gainesville Times, and The Georgia Department of Labor.
According to Lawrence, the large turnout could possibly be attributed to plant closings in the area and downsizing by local companies. It was obvious by the number of employers present, however, that opportunities are still available locally for those looking for work.
Lanier Tech recruiters were also on hand to discuss training programs available at the college for people seeking a new career or needing to update occupational skills.
