Crossroads

Published Nov 18, 2008

Students at Dawson County Crossroads and Middle College have been doing more than studying their books; they have been learning skills that will help them as they leave high school and advance in the world of work by participating in lessons on etiquette taught by Mrs. Nancy Fuchs.

Crossroads2

Each group of students received two days of lessons. First day the topics included how to greet and introduce people, appropriate phone manners for business, and how to handle customers in business.  Other topics included proper etiquette for various social engagements, responding to invitations, and appropriate dress for different occasions.  The students had a great time role playing and demonstrating appropriate and inappropriate behaviors.

The second day of lessons involved table setting and meal planning. Each student set a formal place setting at the desk and practiced serving their peers and removing their peers’ dishes.  They did this, WHY?, because during the next couple of days they would take turns cooking and serving each other as well as the ladies and gentlemen from the Central Office and the Board of Education.

Four meals were planned, prepared, and served at the Appalachian Community Bank.  The Middle College boys and the male members of the Dawson County School Board of Education members enjoyed a Businessmen’s Lunch prepared and served by the Middle College girls on November 5, 2008. The Middle College boys reciprocated by planning, preparing, and serving at Ladies Luncheon to the Middle College girls and female Board of Education members on November 11. Crossroads boys did the same for their female counterparts on November 12, with Crossroads girls hosting the boys on November 12.

Each group of students had a wonderful time, though their favorite was the eating. As for teenagers, food is the sustenance of life.
