Tasting Notes: Zinfandels

We are always searching for high quality Zinfandels, especially the Old Vines Zinfandels, and We have just discovered another which pleases our palate. "The older the vine, the better the juice!"

The reason there are so many old Zinfandel vines in California is that many were planted decades ago by Italian immigrant grape farmers who found that the Zinfandel grape grew abundantly in the California soil. In the heyday of the jug-wine business, the grape was blended with other red grapes to make the jug Burgundies of the 1960's and 1970's. By the 1980's, White Zinfandel was all the rage, and the Zinfandel grape continued to proliferate throughout California. So today we have an abundance of old Zinfandel vines to make excellent quality wines.

Speaking of abundance, we would like to introduce you to the Abundance Vineyards 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel, from the Mencarini Vineyards owned by Dino and Ron Mencarini, who are third generation farmers for this family-owned small vineyard located in Lodi, California.

This wine is a dark cherry red in color and has the aroma of juicy berries and a little bit of dried cherries. The flavor is rich and full with raspberries and cedar, and a bit of pepper. The finish is stout but mellow with the distinctive mature oak tannins lingering after each sip. If you like big tasting Old Vines Zinfandels, this is a wine for you.

I would score this one a 89!
