Tasting Notes: South American Wines

This past weekend, we had a fabulous time tasting South American wines at the Chocolate Moose in Dawsonville. I would like to take this time to say thank you to Barbara, Sue and Randy from the Wells Team of Norton Realty, for a terrific spread of food, and even free wine glasses for all! Also thanks to Diane for being our gracious host at the Chocolate Moose. I think all who attended enjoyed themselves, and for those of you who were not there, you missed a really special event.

We poured a number of wines from Chile and Argentina which were all quite good, but two stood out as the clear winners of this informal tasting:

2003 Caballo Chileno Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Valley Chile)

2004 don Rodolfo Malbec (Cafayate Valley Salta Argentina)

The Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon is medium bodied with concentrated fruit flavors of cherry and currants with light and pleasant tannins in the finish. This wine pairs well with grilled meats and would be excellent with beef ribs.

The Malbec from Argentina is a little more robust with the earthy undertones normally associated with the Malbec grape. The flavor is jammy with berries swirling through it and a slight peppery nuance in the finish. This wine would be great with steak ortomato sauced pasta. Both are available at World Beverage 400.
