In 1966, the first grapes were harvested at the new Robert Mondavi Winery at Oakville, California in the Napa Valley. The winery was so new that the roof had not even been put on the building when the first grapes were brought in. In the next thirty years, Robert Mondavi became know as the Wine King of Napa, and was particularly known for his Cabernet Sauvignon Wines.
The 2005 vintage of the Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has just arrived and continues the heritage for quality Cabernet Wine from this winery. The 2005 growing season was cooler than normal, and special care had to be taken to bring in a harvest of superior quality grapes.
The 2005 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful reddish purple color with good clarity and nice legs. The wine is floral in its bouquet with blackberry and spice aromas. The first taste explodes with blackberry and cassis, with a hint of black cherry, and has layers of oak producing smooth tannins and a lingering finish. This one drinks well right now but will be even better in a few years.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect mate for grilled meats, particularly steak! For a special treat pair it with a sharp cheddar cheese and some ripe red grapes for dessert.
