The color is a deep reddish purple with good clarity and the aromas of blueberry and currant. The flavors swirled throughout the glass with red cherry, currant and blueberry, and a slight taste of lavender. The finish was spicy and peppery with smooth tannins from its sixteen months in French oak...
In the first week of January, I wrote a report about a wine which had scored a 90 in The Wine Spectator. The next week, a customer asked me about the wine and I said I had not tasted it yet, but that it scored a 90 in the Spectator. The customer said before he bought the wine he would wait until I had tasted it, as he trusted my opinion more than The Wine Spectator. I have since tasted this Syrah and I really loved it, but when I read the description written in the Spectator it did not make the wine sound very good to me, so below is The Wine Spectator write up followed by my tasting notes.
The 2005 Concha y Toro Syrah Peumo Marques de Casa Concha is scored a 90.
The description is as follows, "Dark and plush with espresso, fig paste and plum sauce notes pushed by mocha and dark licorice on the finish. Rich smoky finish shows fine-grained tannins and the density for moderate cellaring."
Here are Norm's Tasting Notes for this outstanding Syrah from Chile.
"The color is a deep reddish purple with good clarity and the aromas of blueberry and currant. The flavors swirled throughout the glass with red cherry, currant and blueberry, and a slight taste of lavender. The finish was spicy and peppery with smooth tannins from its sixteen months in French oak. This is a big, well-rounded wine with a silky texture not usually associated with Syrah. I found it hard to score and gave it an 89 to a 91 which puts me in agreement with the Spectator score of 90. The difficulty I had in scoring was due to the wine being so complex, that I kept changing my mind from sip to sip. It was definitely luscious and was very enjoyable when we paired it with a nice rare fillet mignon!"
