When the 2005 vintage of Oyster Bay Pinot Noir was available, we sold all that we could get our hands on, until the supplier had none left. As is true with most good Pinot Noir wines today, it seems that we are constantly waiting for the next vintage to arrive, since the previous one has been exhausted for months. We are pleased to announce that the 2006 Oyster Bay Pinot Noir from Marlborough, New Zealand has just arrived and is now available.
New Zealand has been quietly making a name for itself for its Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Marlborough area. This is noteworthy since the white grape is originally from Bordeaux, France, while the red one originates from Burgundy, France. The growing areas and climate are a little different in the French vineyards, but both of these varieties seem to thrive and produce quality wines from Marlborough, New Zealand.
Marlborough is located on the northeast corner of New Zealand's South Island. The climate there seems to be just right for growing Pinot Noir, with southern winds coming up from Antarctica to cool the vineyards, just as they blow up from the San Pablo Bay into the Carneros region of southern Napa and Sonoma counties in California. This seems to help produce the soft and fragrant style of Pinot Noir found in both parts of the world.
The 2006 Oyster Bay Pinot Noir is elegant in style, with a good nose and bright flavors of cherry, red raspberry and a little spice. The finish is clean and charged with fruit, and it begs for another taste. This wine will pair well with a variety of foods, but it would be perfect for grilled salmon with a hint of dill. Also, if you like red wine with turkey, this might be a good choice for Thanksgiving, provided there is still some around by then.
