Its Easter weekend and even though it is very early this year, it looks like we are going to have pretty good weather here in the Atlanta area for it, even though it is still March. Of course last year we had warm weather in March and then had a hard freeze in the first week of April, which wreaked havoc on our Georgia vineyards.

Speaking of Georgia wine, I have two great wines for your Easter feast, whether you are having lamb, or ham, the two most traditional meals for Easter. Both of these wines come from Blackstock Vineyards right up the road near Dahlonega, Georgia, and both of these wines are excellent in their respective categories.

The number one meal for Easter is ham, and most people enjoy a white wine with this dinner, but I would encourage you to try a good Rose, such as the 2006 Blackstock Sangiovese Rose. This is a dry style Rose with succulent, but delicate fruit flavors of bright cherry and strawberry, which ends with a crisp clean taste. It is perfect for your Easter ham! Sangiovese is the predominate grape in Chianti, but this is a very different flavor from Chianti, as it is big on the fruit with a strong backbone of acidity to give it that clean finish.

If you are having lamb for dinner, I have for you the best bottle of wine I have ever had with lamb. I used to think that lamb had to be served with Merlot until last year when we had a blind tasting and compared an expensive Napa Merlot with the 2005 Blackstock ACE "A Family Reserve." ACE stands for the first names of winemaker David Harris's three children, whose names are Austin, Chandler and Eliza. This is a blended wine, or as some may say a Meritage, and consists of 47% Touriga, 43% Mourvedre and 10% Merlot. Wow, what a combo, it has everything Merlot does and more! The black skinned grapes add darker tasting fruit and more nuances of flavor than you can count, but blackberry, plum and cherry abound. The finish is strong and lingering, with mellow tannins.

Why not make this a true Georgia Easter with either one of these wonderful Georgia wines from Blackstock Vineyards?
