Norm's Tasting Notes: 2007 Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills Chardonnay

Published Oct 31, 2008

Horse Heaven Hills is east of the Cascade Mountains, just north of the Columbia River in Washington State, and was named for the wild horses which once roamed there. Columbia Crest Winery now grows grapes there in a unique soil made up of of basalt and bedrock, which create an intense flavor providing a big mouthful of fruit in the wines made there.

I have just tasted the 2007 Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills Chardonnay, and found it to be quite delightful. The nose was apple and pear, and the flavor abounded with pineapple and other tropical fruits. The finish was filled with a creamy texture of vanilla, and a hint of oak, which lingered on the palate until the next sip! The Wine Spectator scored the 2006 vintage a 91, and although I could not find a score for this just released vintage, I would score it in the 89 to 91 range also.

This one will pair well with Teriyaki Grilled Chicken or Cornish Game Hen prepared in orange sauce, with wild rice! If you like Southwestern fare such as Santa Fe Salad this would be perfect!
