The wine for this week is the 2006 DeLoach Russian River Valley Chardonnay.

This was an editor's choice in the February 26, 2008 Wine Spectator which rated it at 87 points, with the following quote from James Laube: "intense and vibrant, with fresh, tight and tart citrus-laced green apple flavors that are mouthwatering. Drink now. 30,000 cases made."

This Chardonnay is a blend of several premium vineyards located within three miles of the DeLoach winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley. It is 100% Chardonnay, and is 13.5% alcohol. I found it to be delightful, and I am certainly fond of Chardonnay from the Russian River. This one is a bargain for wine from that area at only $14.99! The nose was explosive with aromas of pear and pineapple, and a hint of lemon zest. Of course the flavor was big and bold being representative of its origin, and there was plenty of apple, pear, and tropical fruit with a wonderful tangy undertone. The finish was smooth and lingering with both butter and a slight amount of oak. My score would be 89.

We enjoyed this with barbecued shrimp in my own special sauce, and a salad with more of my home-grown tomatoes. It would pair well with almost any seafood or fowl dish, but it would be hard to beat with shrimp scampi, if you don't have my special sauce recipe.
