The Maryhill Winery can be found about one hundred miles east of Portland Oregon, just across the border into Washington State, near the small town of Goldendale, Washington. Located in the Columbia River Gorge, near Mount Hood and the Hood River, this is a beautiful part of America, which I have traveled through on several occasions. Not only is the area picturesque, but excellent wine is made here also.
The Maryhill Winery began operation in 1999, with an initial production of 4500 cases. Today the winery produces in excess of 50,000 cases per year. The awards and medals for the winery are numerous, including three gold medals and a first place finish for their Cabernet Sauvignon at the Washington State Wine Competition!
The 2004 Maryhill Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a winner in every aspect, including price. The wine is dark ruby red in color, with the aromas of currants and cherries. The flavor is one of cherries and dark berries with undertones of chocolate and herbs, and a hint of oak in its long and smooth finish. We of course enjoyed this one with a thick grilled steak, but saved a couple of glasses to sip on after dinner.
