Norm's Tasting Notes: Winter Wine Tasting

Published Feb 19, 2008

We had a wine tasting at our house last week, at which time we sampled nine different wines, with three white and six red. This was a real mixed bag, as there were wines from several different areas in no particular order. The wines were presented in order of lightest white on up to the most robust red. The people tasting the wine were asked to score each wine on a one to ten scale as to their own personal preference for that particular wine. Of course not very scientific but great fun!

To accompany the tasting there were five different cheeses with about four different crackers and some red and white grapes. It is always interesting to pair the wine flavors with different cheeses. All together the expense for this tasting was about thirty dollars for the food and around ninety dollars for the wines, at an average of ten dollars per bottle. This will serve sixteen people with each getting about an ounce and a half of nine different wines.

So for about $120.00 you can put on your own wine tasting and create an entertaining afternoon for yourself and friends, and at the same time learn a little more about wine and food. It is a long winter and this is a great way to enjoy your friends and have a learning experience at the same time. I will of course be willing to assist you in choosing the wines and cheeses for your event.

The two wines which were enjoyed the most at our tasting were the 2006 E Minor Barossa Valley Chardonnay from Australia, which averaged an eight on our one to ten scale, and the 2005 J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, from Paso Robles, California, which had an average score of nine. Both of thses wines are available at our store.
