The number-one best selling red wine variety in the United States today is Merlot. Merlot is a grape variety which grows well in an abundance of places all over the globe. One area of the United States which produces some outstanding Merlots, is the Columbia Valley in the state of Washington. In 2002 the Northstar Winery held its grand opening in Walla Walla, Washington, and has produced some of the most top-rated Merlots in the country over the last few years. These are premium wines in the upper tier price range.
One of the lessor known secrets in the wine world is the Northstar "little sister", Stella Maris, which is a Bordeaux style blend with a preponderance of Merlot. In 2003, this wine was scored a 90 by The Wine Spectator, and the 2004 vintage has just arrived in the Atlanta area with a Robert Parker score of 88.
The 2004 Stella Maris Columbia Valley Red Wine is 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petite Verdot. Parker's Wine Advocate describes thusly, "This fine effort, designed to restore the good name of Merlot, offers an attractive nose of cedar, spice box, cassis, and cherry. Forward, supple, and ripe on the palate, the wine has excellent balance and enough structure to drink well for up to a decade."
Because of restrictive availability on this wine we will have to limit orders to only six bottles each. However, as a special treat for the new year, we are offering this wonderful wine for ten dollars off of the suggested retail price.
