In 1876, Giuseppe and Pietro Simi, from Tuscany, Italy, founded a winery in California to apply the wine making methods they had learned in their native country. This started a tradition of excellent wines from the rolling hills and lush valleys of Sonoma County where Chardonnay flourishes. Wine is still being made in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California under the name Simi, and I am pleased to announce the arrival of the latest vintage of Simi Sonoma County Chardonnay.
The 2007 Simi Sonoma County Chardonnay just arrived in the Atlanta area a few weeks ago and continues the tradition of fine wines from Simi, and Sonoma County.
This is a very drinkable Chardonnay with aromas of tropical fruit and pear. The flavors swirl around your tongue with pronounced apple and pear, followed by a smooth and crisp acidity, with a touch of lemon zest. There is a little oak in the finish, but it is not overbearing and it is a very clean aftertaste with maybe a hint of vanilla. I like a crisp finish in Chardonnay especially in the hot summer months, and this one will pair well with chicken or salmon from the grill. It is also a good choice for sipping on the back porch after the sun goes down!
