Lake Lanier Association 19th Annual Shore Sweep Tomorrow

Published Sep 28, 2007

Please join us for the Lake Lanier Association's 19th annual Shore Sweep on September 29!.  If you can help in the trash pickup, go to one of the marinas listed and pick up your trash bag. When you return the bag full of trash, you will receive a 2007 Lake Lanier Association T-shirt or 2007 Shore Sweep patches for our scouting volunteers.

Information and the flyer are on our web site at http://www.lakelanier.org/ev_ss_lla_shore_sweep.php.

Trash pick up will be from 8:00 AM to l: 00 PM.   The volunteer appreciation party is the same day at Lanier Park on Buford Dam Rd from 1 :00 PM until 4:00 PM.   Volunteers  will enjoy picnic food, a DJ,  entertainment and drawings for some great prizes.

Please use the flyer to let your friends and neighbors know about Shore Sweep.   We still need a few volunteers to work at the Shore Sweep sites and  we would also appreciate a Spanish-speaking volunteer to help our outreach about Shore Sweep to the Hispanic community. If you are interested in helping in the above capacities, please call the office at 770-503-7757.

Let us know areas around the lake with a lot of trash

We will try to direct volunteers to these areas but are unable to guarantee that they will be cleaned up. Please visit our web site at http://www.lakelanier.org/ev_ss_lla_locate_trash.php, and fill in the form with the details, including precise directions by road or water. We will then put a list of these areas on our web site so volunteers can find out areas in need of cleaning.  If you do not have internet access, please call the office at 770-503-7757 with the information.

Styrofoam drop off sites

The following sites will be set up to receive styrofoam:

Dawson Co.:  War Hill Park

Forsyth Co.:   Port Royale Marina, Sawnee Campground, Port Royale
Please bring styrofoam out of water and place in dumpster at Sawnee and by boat ramp.

Hall Co.:  Aqualand, Clarks Bridge, Gainesville, Starboard Cove and Starboard Cove Marinas
Please leave styrofoam secured in water.

Shore Sweep in Dawson County

A new plan is being tested in Dawson County to make Shore Sweep more effective, efficient and more enjoyable.   Unlike prior years, work to be done will be divided into work groups.  For example, one work group will do preparatory work.   Prior to September 29 they will locate loose styrofoam, stake and rope it, and move it to the shore line for pick up on the 29th;  they will also bag trash and place it on the shore line for pick up on the 29th.  On the 29th another work group will take the sytrofoam and trash by boat to War Hill Park.

Volunteers coming by road may pick up bags at War Hill Park.  Please return filled trash bags to War Hill Park for collection.

Your Dawson County Shore Sweep Coordinators are Gordon Brand and Dick McNeill, longstanding LLA members and residents of Dawson.  Gordon and Dick are asking you to for help by volunteering your time and boat/pontoon (if you have one).  To volunteer contact Gordon (706-216-4725) or Dick (706-216-4763).  They will provide complete details.

We appreciate everyone's support and hope you will join us to make this a great Shore Sweep!

Important Updates as of September 28:

Boaters bringing in trash to Hall County sites by boat need to exercise extreme caution because of the low lake level.  In Hall County, Styrofoam and large objects may be taken to Aqualand Marina, Gainesville Marina, Clarks Bridge Park, and in Forsyth to Sawnee Campground off of Buford Dam Road, just west of the dam.

No trash can be taken by boat to Sunrise Cove Marina at all.  Starboard Cove Marina will not be open for Shore Sweep at all. Please do not take large objects/foam by boat to Holiday Marina, Lazy Days, Lake Lanier Islands, or Lanier Harbor Marina.

The Lake Lanier Association hopes that volunteers will take advantage of the exposed shoreline to pick up trash on foot.  We appreciate the community's help in in cleaning up Lake Lanier. Thank you so much.
