On May 31, 2008, Dawson County wrapped up participation in the Great American Clean Up, America’s largest community involvement program.

Several groups participated in projects including a citizens’ clean up at Toto Creek Park led by Kristen Kendall of Dawsonville. Kendall’s group removed and sorted litter; then deposited recyclables at the Dawson County Recycling Center.

The Dawson County Treatment Court sponsored a volunteer project at Devil’s Elbow on May 10 involving 22 participants and staff including Superior Court Judge Jason Deal. The group later rewarded themselves with a swim and cook out.

Dawson County Facilities, led by Director James Tolbert, performed a clean up at the Steel Bridge involving removal of litter from both sides of the bridge and installation of several trash receptacles to be monitored weekly.

Adam Smith, on behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Dawson County, organized a project in which he coordinated collection, pick up, delivery and recycling of over 250 pounds of telephone books.

Finally, Richard Grove, The Georgia Kayaker, took a team down the Etowah, paddling 12 miles and clearing numerous trees and logs while enjoying the beauty of the river.

“The Great American Clean Up in Dawson County involved over 200 man-hours, removed approximately 670 pounds of litter, recycled over 250 pounds of phone books and beautified nearly 14 miles of shoreline,” said Keep Dawson County Beautiful Executive Director Cathy Brooks. “We are so appreciative of those who joined this successful grassroots effort to improve, preserve and protect our environment.”
