New Hope UMC Church in Gainesville Has Been a Rock of Redemption for Over 160 Years

For over 160 years, the ministry and witness of New Hope United Methodist Church in Gainesville has been a rock of redemption to its faithful congregation.
“We are a loving family of faith with an expanding ministry to all ages,” observes Pastor Larry Patton. “We are open-minded and non-judgemental, but we are passionate about Scripture, meaningful worship, and God's love for us and for the world in Christ."
New Hope UMC was organized circa 1839 with fourteen charter members. Amusingly, because of its proximity to a large spring, the original church was known as “Lick Log” or “Head of the Creek.” Following the Civil War, a second church was built and christened “New Hope” after the congregation’s godly aspirations. The success of New Hope’s “come grow with us” philosophy has necessitated the building of successively larger sanctuaries down through the years. The current sanctuary seats 266 worshippers and expands to accommodate 600.
Serving the tri-county area of Dawson, Hall and Forsyth counties, New Hope UMC offers a variety of ministries and community outreach programs. The church’s Stephen Ministry program equips lay people to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals experiencing difficulties in their lives. For youths from pre-school through the fifth grade, New Hope UMC sponsors Cool Kids, a rotational Sunday school program.
New Hope is also home to the only chapter of Mothers Against Methamphetamine (MAMa) in Forsyth County. A Christian organization founded in 2002, MAMa provides preventative and rehabilitative resources to combat the epidemic abuse of the highly addictive drug. The New Hope chapter of MAMa meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.
