Dawson County Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony

Published May 31, 2007

I wish to thank the many that remembered the meaning of this past holiday and chose to attend our Memorial Day Service in Dawson County. Wayne Watkins, President of the Viet Nam Veterans of America, Chapter 970 delivered the welcome. Captain Larry Freeland was our keynote speaker and he gave a moving tribute to our Veterans, Active Military and those in uniform that had paid the ultimate price. He also reminded us that it is because of these brave men and women that we are free to enjoy our liberties.

Senator Chip Pearson humbly spoke of the Veterans and all they meant to him as well as his family. He also reminded everyone that freedom is not free.

Many paid with their lives for us.

Dan Titus made his bagpipes sound strong as he played, "America the Beautiful" and his "Amazing Grace" brought chills and tears to us all. The Veterans Alliance twenty-one gun salute and taps  echoed through out the Veterans Memorial Park causing the children playing in the near by pool to stand in silence as did the entire audience who came to show their respects.

Two of our Veterans that serve Dawson County were present. Chairman for the Board of Commissioners, Mike Berg and County Manager, Phil Anderson showed their support. The Woman's Club came to the service and proudly held their banner that said, "The Dawson County Woman's Club supports our Veterans"

We must remember our Veterans and troops daily. They gave so much and are still giving. Major Leon Millholland was scheduled to be our keynote speaker but he was called up to return to Iraq. This is to be his second tour.

Please continue to keep all these men and women in your hearts and prayers.
