Norm's Tasting Notes: 2004 Bellino Montepulciano d' Abruzzo

East of Rome, Italy is a grape growing region which is almost the opposite of the much acclaimed region of Tuscany where lifestyles and wines are of great renown. The region of Abruzzo east of Rome is made up of hardworking simple people who know the value of good food and wine at a modest price.

The grapes grown there are predominantly Sangiovese and Montepilciano. The Montepulciano seems to grow really well in Abruzzo, and has high yields of juice which makes larger quantities of wine. The juice is anywhere from purple to ruby red and produces a wine which is big in flavor and low in acidity, making a wine which is really easy to drink.

Since we are all in a period where we are seeking the most value for our dollar, a wine like the 2004 Bellino Montepulciano d' Abruzzo is a pleasant, moderately priced wine which goes down easy with a variety of foods. The wine is dry, but soft in character, more so than a Chianti. The flavors swirl together with with hints of both cherries and red berries. The finish has good structure and mild sweet tannins which linger for a while as you contemplate the next sip. This is not a great bottle of wine, but it is so pleasant, that you can become very comfortable with it, as you would an old friend!

Of course this is a great spaghetti wine, and even better with pizza, but for a real treat, find a good recipe for chicken cacciatore, and a warm loaf of bread, and you will think you are relaxing in the hills of Abruzzi at a modest table with friends!

Ahhh, I remember those days. Employed, sipping wine, not a worry in the world.
