First let me say that I am a better than average cook, and I invent many recipes, or make adjustments to existing ones. Such was the case last Saturday when I made an adjustment to a very good recipe for Beef Stroganoff. The result was fabulous, and the dish was taken to new heights with the wonderful bottle of wine we enjoyed along with the Stroganoff!

We were sampling the 2005 Gnarly Head California Merlot from Gnarly Head Cellars, Manteca, California. Gnarly Head takes its name from the old twisted and gnarled vines it uses in its Old Vine Zinfandel, and they were selected by the Wine Enthusiast magazine as the American Winery of the year in 2007. The 2005 Gnarly Head California Merlot took the gold medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in 2008.

This is an unbelievably good bottle of wine to be in the ten dollar price range! It has a wonderful bouquet of abundant ripe berries and a huge flavor swell of jammy cherry and red berries which just sails on and on. The finish is strong with lingering flavors of the fruit coupled with a nice toasty oak finish that compels another sip. It was great with our Stroganoff and would also pair well with any grilled meat or hearty stew.
