For several years now, we have enjoyed vintage after vintage of Greg Norman's Santa Barbara Pinot Noir with consistent scores of 88 to 90. Well here we go again -- the 2007 Greg Norman California Pinot Noir has recently arrived in the Atlanta market, and it is right there with the previous vintages.
Santa Barbara county has proved itself to be a great place to grow Pinot Noir, and this is an excellent example! The costal climate is the secret, with warm sunny days and cooling ocean breezes in the evening.
This Pinot Noir is ruby red in color with the scent of strawberries. It descends on your taste buds to reveal the swirling flavors of cherries and a hint of the strawberries. The finish is smooth with good structure and the evidence of mild tannins from the aging in a combination of one to three-year-old French and American oak barrels. Less than half of the wine was aged in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit flavors and maintain some acidity for better structure. The result is a teriffic bottle of wine.
Pinot Noir has always been my favorite with grilled salmon, and while this wine would pair well with a host of other foods, I suggest you get yourself some salmon and head for the grill.
